Sonequa Martin-Green stars in ‘My Dead Friend Zoe’, film with 90% veteran cast and crew

By Capt. Christopher Mulrooney

The movie “My Dead Friend Zoe” hits close to home to me, as a U.S.  Army veteran serving in Iraq in 2003 and 2004.  And I have served as part of the Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve for 10.5 years.

This movie, which is now in theaters, hits me in my heart.

“My Dead Friend Zoe” centers around a U.S. Army veteran, Sgt. Merit (played by Sonequa Martin-Green, who starred as Capt. Michael Burnham in “Star Trek: Discovery”). Merit has returned home and is dealing with a loss of her best friend Zoe, a soldier she served with in Afghanistan.  She is haunted by her. Throughout the movie, Zoe is talking and interacting with her.

Another star, Morgan Freeman, who’s a U.S. Air Force veteran, portrays a group therapy counselor who helps fellow veterans discuss and tell their story.

What makes this movie so special is that 90% of the cast and crew are veterans. And “My Dead Friend Zoe” is inspired by a true story.
