USS Angeles soars at warp 10

By Fleet Capt. Dave Mason, Commanding Officer

The USS Angeles has gone everywhere from Starfleet headquarters to Las Vegas this year.
In April, the Los Angeles-based club beamed down to the Japanese Garden and Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in Van Nuys in the Los Angeles area. The site has been used as a filming location for Starfleet Academy and Starfleet Headquarters on “The Next Generation,’ “Deep Space Nine,” “Voyager” and “Enterprise.” During the same away mission, we visited the Reseda location of the former Filmation Studio, which produced the 1973-75 animated “Star Trek” series.

In May, we explored Sherwood Forest itself — aka Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge, where the “Next Generation” episode “Qpid” was filmed. We also enjoyed strawberry shortcakes and more at the California Strawberry Festival in Ventura.
We continued to reach for the stars with a visit in June to Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, which was followed that month by beaming down to Franklin Canyon Lake, the Beverly Hills location for the “Star Trek” episode “Paradise Syndrome.” That’s the story in which Capt. James T. Kirk (William Shatner) loses his memory and becomes a member of a Native American-like community.
In July, we boldly went to the Santa Monica Pier, a filming location for “Future’s End,” a time travel episode of “Star Trek: Voyager.” Our summer away missions continued with a trip to San Diego Comic Con and to a “Star Trek” convention in Las Vegas, where we saw actors representing all of the “Star Trek” shows.
We’re an active “Star Trek” club with a proud history. We encourage you to join us during our in-person missions or our monthly Zoom chats.
