Angeles watches ‘Discovery’ premiere
By Fleet Capt. Dave Mason
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – From her captain’s chair on the USS Discovery, Capt. MIchael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) sends her crew into its missions with a smile and two powerful words.
“Let’s fly.”
And we did. A dozen USS Angeles members soared to the 32nd century in time to watch the premiere of the fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery.”
We gathered at Lisa Sobien’s and my home April 7 in Simi Valley to watch the Paramount+ episodes “Red Directive” and “Twin Moons” on our 55-inch TV.
We were impressed. “Discovery” characters continue to evolve in poignant and realistic ways as they tackle a dramatic, galaxy-changing search. There will be no plot spoilers here, but it’s safe to say this is one of the most urgent storylines in “Star Trek” history.
Attending the viewing party were Paul Szymborski, Jenny Taylor, Lisa Sobien, Kat Campbell, Kristine and Dennis Cherry, Joe Queen, Lili Queen, Cassie Queen, Jeremy Kranz, Chris Mulrooney and I. We gathered for a crew photo, and some of us appeared in photos with “Let’s fly” foams that the Queen family picked up at the recent WonderCon in Anaheim. They kindly gave them to members.
It was the largest group Lisa and I have hosted since moving last September to the condominium we rent. We formerly lived in Goleta in the Santa Barbara area.
Before and after the episodes, Angeles members discussed “Star Trek” and enjoyed chicken, sandwiches and more.
More about this party and “Discovery” will appear in the June edition of Angels Flight, the USS Angeles’ award-winning newsletter. A PDF version is emailed to all crew members. To become a member, click on Join Us.
